The American Restaurant has been recognized as the premier venue for outstanding cuisine since it opened in 1974, and has consistently received the Mobil Four-Star rating and the AAA Four Diamond Award.  The restaurant is perched atop Crown Center and offers a spectacular panoramic view of Downtown and the surrounding area. It was designed by architect Warren Platner, who also designed Windows on the World in New York. Though its décor has been updated through the years the timeless design and elegant surroundings are still breathtaking, and were honored in 1991 by the American Institute of Architects with its Allied Arts and Craftsmanship Award.

Since 2001, Executive Chef Celina Tio has introduced her own brand of fun, variety and surprise to the menu that has impressed both our local customers and her peers in the industry. Celina has won numerous Awards, including Winner of Best Chef 2007:  Midwest award by the James Beard Foundation Her goal is to use the freshest ingredients to prepare the highest quality foods available in Kansas City.
Chef Celina is joined by Willie Grandsion, a Kansas City icon, who has been the bartender since the day the restaurant opened. His “Stinging Bee” cocktail won an award in 1999 and is still a favorite at the bar.

The staff at the American is committed to delivering outstanding food and service to our lunch, dinner and event guests. We welcome private parties, corporate events and wedding celebrations, and are eager to work with clients to design the menu and details of these functions.
