Emery, Bird and Thayer Department Store was Kansas City’s first department
store: founded in 1863. The store served generations of
Midwesterners during a century of business at its 11th and Grand
location. During the 1960’s the advent of suburban flight and new
shopping malls signaled the end to this great part of Kansas City’s
downtown shopping scene.
One of the features of Emery, Bird and Thayer was an open Mezzanine
that served as a fashionable tearoom. Kansas City businessman R.
Crosby Kemper and Myron Green chairman Richard Harman thought the
great tradition and quality of service offered at Emery, Bird and
Thayer should continue.
In 1979, Emery, Bird and Thayer was reborn as EBT restaurant. An
upscale, fine dining restaurant fashioned from artifacts and
memorabilia from the old department store. The restaurant quickly
continued the tradition of fine food and excellent service in a
beautiful setting.
Artifacts taken from the old department store and showcased in the
restaurant are the sandstone column capitals, the chandeliers,
stained glass, and of course, the original elevator cages.
We sincerely hope you enjoy the wonderful food, friendly service and
romantic atmosphere at our EBT restaurant. We have brought some
historic memories from downtown to south Kansas City for your dining
pleasure.

"It is one of my favorite restaurants. I brought a friend who was celebrating her birthday. She had never been there before. She, like I, thought it was a great place to eat and would also go there again. I would recommend it to everyone! The food is delicious, everyone is very efficient and friendly." |

"We dinned this past Thursday. We
enjoyed two of the recommended wines. None of us are wine experts;
we therefore appreciated the advice. Everyone ordered a salad.
Mine was delicious and such a nice change from a bowl of torn
lettuce and two slices of cucumber! The majority of us ordered the
special – beef, lamb and scallops. What a great way for
first-timers to sample a variety of your fare. We enjoyed the
atmosphere and service and hope to visit again soon" |

"We took out of
town guests to EBT and they said it was the best place they've ever
been to in K.C. The food, service and atmosphere was outstanding!
Only complaint was one of the desserts. We had creme brulee, bananas
foster and souffle. The souffle was tasteless but the other two were
delicious!." |

"My husband
took me to EBT for my birthday and it was a wonderful experience. I
had the crab stuffed halibut and he had the salmon. The Bananas
Foster was prepared at our table and was delicious! The service was
great and the live music made for a romantic evening. We had a
wonderful experience at EBT." |

"My husband and I went to EBT
for his birthday. Our server was not the friendliest person, which I
assume is because my husband and I look very young. The food was
okay, but over priced. I'd rather go elsewhere for a special
occasion." |

"I
had lunch for the first time at EBT Restaurant on Wednesday and it
was delightful. The food and service were first-rate, but what
really made the difference was that the President, Ed Holland, came
by our table to visit. He was so friendly, personable, and outgoing,
it just added to our experience" |

"If
anyone is looking for a nice place to take a good friend or relative
for a special lunch treat this is the place to go. I like this
restaurant so much that I use it as an excuse to take my good
friends and mother there for their birthdays. The service and food
is wonderful. It's like being Queen for an Hour." |

"EBT
has become our restaurant of choice - whether for special occasions
or just a quiet night out together. Never have we had a poor
experience - the wait staff is attentive and very friendly, but
never overbearing - we always have our privacy. The food is
exceptional as is the wine selection. It is nice to find a place so
comfortable that we call it "our" restaurant!" |

"EBT's
is a wonderful restaurant for both lunch and dinner. Five years
ago I had a lovely suprise birthday dinner in one of their
romantic "elevator rooms". Since then, I have eaten
there more than any other restaurant in the KC area. My clients
seem to really enjoy the Asian noodle salad for lunch and I have
never been disappointed by the food or service. An excellent
choice when you want to be impressed." |

"Totally a
relaxing evening and wonderful food is what we’ve learned to
expect at EBT. We especially enjoy the live piano music and
normally visit on Friday evenings. We always go to EBT on special
occasions or whenever we need a special occasion. We’ve had
almost everything on their menu and have no problem trying new
dishes there because we’ve not ever had a bad meal." |

"Great and
interesting food. The atmosphere was lacking at early dinner. If
you go after dark, you can't see the bank surroundings as much. It
was the only place in Kansas City that I've been to with souffle." |
